Implementing the Bio-Back Into Your Facility
Sample Bio-Back™ Implementation for Nursing Facilities:
To help you plan for a successful implementation of the Bio-Back, we have prepared this sample implementation plan. As you implement the Bio-Back into your facility we are happy to work with you to ensure your success. Your feed back is greatly appreciated!
A training session will be held with your staff. Participants should include the facilities day time nursing staff, the Director of Nursing, the physical therapy staff and the MDS Coordinator. Staff training should cover:
- The benefits of the Bio-Back for the residents
- The possible time savings benefits for staff
- How to identify residents for whom the Bio-Back should be appropriate (for both existing and newly admitted residents)
- How to fit the Bio-Back for resident use
- Overview of reimbursement considerations
- Possible benefits for staff use of the Bio-Back
To the extent possible, use your MDS software to identify existing residents for whom the Bio-Back may be appropriate. If a resident meets any of the following criteria, the Bio-Back may be appropriate for that resident:
- If section G, question 3a or 3b indicates balance issues while standing or sitting
- If section J, question 1n indicates the resident has an unsteady gait
- If section J, questions 2a and 3a indicate the resident suffers from back pain
Other means of identifying residents for whom the Bio-Back might be appropriate:
- Your nursing staff's direct knowledge of your residents and their needs
- Your physical therapy staff
- Your admissions assessment processes. These should be modified to include a reminder to flag residents for whom the Bio-Back might be appropriate.
For each resident that is identified, refer the residents to the physical therapy team for evaluation to determine if the Bio-Back is appropriate.
- Determine that Medicare or insurance coverage exists for those residents for whom the Bio-Back can assist. If a resident happens to be covered by Worker's Compensation or insurance, obtain any C9 or pre-authorization as required for each payer.
- If a resident does not have qualifying coverage, determine if the resident or responsible party is willing to pay for the Bio-Back on a private pay basis.
- Dispense and bill.
